Discover How to Make the Flexitarian Diet Work for You
Most people will look at you blankly if you said you were on the ‘Flexitarian diet’ and ask, “Flexi-what?”
With the plethora of fad diets hitting the weight loss scene constantly, it makes one wonder if the Flexitarian diet is even necessary. Yet, this diet has helped thousands of people lose weight, reduce inflammation and make healthier food choices.
While the name may be ‘new’, the principles are based on the diet choices of our ancestors, and no, they didn’t gorge themselves on meat like the paleo diet would have you believe. It was easier to live on vegetables and crops.
To make the Flexitarian diet work for you, there are a few tips you should be aware of…
- Take it slow
Making sweeping dietary changes overnight is NEVER a good idea. Not only will you be combating your old negative eating habits, but your body will resist too. You’ll have food cravings, headaches and other ill-effects as your hormones play up.
So, make gradual changes. The core principle of the flexitarian diet is to reduce your consumption of meat and replace these foods with vegetables and fruit. The goal is to slowly switch to a more plant-based diet.
While you’re not expected to be fully vegetarian (or vegan), which is why there’s a ‘flexi’ in Flexitarian (a hint at flexibility), your goal is to get your meat to vegetable ratio to about 80:20. While the numbers are not set in stone, this is a good ratio to abide by.
Start off with a 50/50 ratio and whittle down the meat portions gradually.
- Choose the veggies you love
Some people detest vegetables and it may be a Herculean task getting them to consume more plant-based foods. A rule of thumb is to eat the vegetables you love.
Once you acquire a taste for the greens, you may decide to gradually try varieties of vegetables. Try and eat organic, if you can.
- Eat the veggies FIRST!
The Flexitarian diet is focused on ‘adding’ plant-based foods to your diet instead of subtracting foods that you’re not supposed to eat. This approach is very different from other diets such as the Atkins or paleo diets which aim to eliminate carbs or sugar.
With the Flexitarian approach, the belief is that by eating more healthy foods, you’ll help ‘balance’ your diet. To get the most out of this approach, it’s best to consume the plant-based foods on your plate first.
Eat slowly and mindfully, and chew your food well. When you rush your meals, there’s a tendency to eat more because of the ‘lag time’. It takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain it’s full.
By eating the vegetables first and slowly, you’ll feel more sated and less likely to consume too much meat.
- Prepare your meals at home
This is a bit of a hassle, no doubt. But it actually simplifies things if you look at the big picture. Prepare your meals for 3 days at one go.
Now all you need to do is take the food out of the refrigerator and heat it up. It also eliminates decision fatigue which arises from always wondering what to eat.
It’ll be much more difficult to comply with the Flexitarian diet if you’re going to rely on meals prepared in restaurants and so on. Their portions and macronutrient ratios will not be conducive to the diet. So cook your own meals.
- Watch the proteins
A common bugbear that vegetarians face is the constant worry about protein. The general misconception is that plants lack the protein found in meat. This is just a fallacy.
The truth is that plants contain just as much protein as meat. In fact, they contain more protein. The key to getting sufficient protein in your diet will be to eat a wide variety of vegetables.
